AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Television advertising captured Ms Emery's attention for the Spectacular. "I have not seen any Chinese performances before. I saw the adverts on TV and saw all the rave reviews and thought, 'I am definitely going'."

"It's great. I like to be told something rather than just seeing dance scenes," she said.

There were a number of acts that she particularly liked, "It is really nice I really liked the one with the fan and the drums—they were fantastic. The Mongolian ladies were really nice."

She said the dancing was very quiet, "The dancing was really elegant, they were really quiet when they moved. You usually don't get that in our society—it is usually loud and banging—this is nice and relaxed."

'I think it was breathtaking'

Another audience member, Kim McEverly, was also impressed by the aesthetic qualities presented within the Spectacular.

"I haven't been well, but I liked this—I actually felt well and I was able to identify with them [the performers] and pretend that I was able to do that, even when I know that I can't. I felt like I could—that's what I mean.

"I think it was breathtaking... I think 'awesome' is so overused but I think it was awesome, it was very breathtaking."
