AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Amato Akarana, an elder of the Nga Puhi Maori people, has commended the Divine Performing Arts show, for its "excellent" and "mighty" performances.
"The whole coordination... the timing and everyone and the beautiful costumes, it's been worthwhile coming to see."
Akarana could not identify what his favourite part of the show was, "It's all good, there's no favourite parts. I was sitting next to a Chinese couple and they were telling me what was going on. It's very similar to our Maori culture, the binding and how it binds together."
In this respect, he gave the example of the "Loyalty of Yue Fei," a dance performance telling the story of one of China's most famous military generals Yue Fei, who as a young man was tattooed on the back. His mother tattooed four Chinese characters reading "serve the country loyally."
"I [already] know a little bit [about Chinese culture] but I suppose I could learn a lot more about the culture of our Chinese people," he said.
At interval he said: "I hope that the next part will be just as good as it was in the first, and I'm sure it will be. I'm sure it will be."
