SYDNEY, Australia—"I've never seen anything like this before", were the words of Mr. Dong Trevor, a management agent for renowned country music singer Gina Jeffreys.

After witnessing the Chinese Spectacular on its opening night in Sydney's Entertainment Centre, Mr Trevor described the performances as "beautiful".

"What a big variety there is. Obviously, over so many thousands of years, there's a lot of different aspects of it. It's very interesting," he said.

Mr. Trevor visited Shanghai in 2001 and attended a show produced by CCTV where he saw some Chinese dancers. "But nothing as spectacular as this," he said.

He commented on the staging and backdrops, describing them as very effective. Mr Trevor also appreciated the unique melodies and instrumentation used throughout the Spectacular, and especially enjoyed the drum performance ['Victory Drums'].

"Very spectacular," he said.

'Extremely beautiful and very diverse'

Lawyer Elizabeth Henderson attended the Spectacular with her parents.

She was stirred by the clear distinction between masculine and feminine genders depicted within all performances.

"I like the distinction between the man and the woman. It's very, very clear. The men are very powerful and the women are very elegant. It's lovely," she said.

Ms Walsh also expressed her appreciation for the use of costumes and props, describing the intricate 3D backgrounds as "really cool!"

When asked if she had seen a show like this before, Ms. Walsh replied: "No, I've never seen anything like it.

"It's extremely beautiful and very diverse," she said.

"I would say it's very peaceful and very powerful, which I know is contradictory, but I think that's accurate."

'It flows like a ribbon'

Mr and Mrs White, a retired couple, had never experienced anything like the Chinese Spectacular and found it difficult to single out any performance as their favourite.

"I couldn't put any one part, because it flows, it's been flowing, you know, absolutely like a ribbon. And it's been beautiful," Mrs White said.

When asked again which act she enjoyed most, Mrs. White replied: "All of it!"

After contemplating, Mr White replied, "Look...I was amazed at the singing, because I've not had any experience of a Chinese baritone or a soprano before and it was beautiful."

Of the dancing, he said "You couldn't fault it one bit!"

The friendly couple described the subtitles during the solos to be particularly useful and found it easy to understand the cultural messages contained within all of the performances.

"It's given me a great insight into Mainland China," said Mr White.
