MUNICH, Germany—Despite the interference by the Chinese Consulate, the Shen Yun Chinese Spectacular was performed in Munich on April 18. The Chinese Consulate attempted to pressure the operations manager of the Prince Regent Theater to prevent the Chinese the show from taking place.
The Divine Performing Arts company, which performed the show, is from the United States. Under the communist regime, the Spectacular is prohibited in China.
The audience was delighted with the performance. "I find this gracefulness, these movements enchanting. The costumes and the blaze of colors are also fascinating—that indulges the senses," said Christiane Schreck, a native of France who lives in Munich with her husband.
Being interested in art, Christiane described the difference between classical Chinese dance and European ballet: "The Chinese [style], for the men, it is more about fighting and demeanor and has a much larger energy and expressiveness than the Europeans. That is impressive—this speed, this sportsmanship—one can hardly find that here, not even with the modern ballet.
"And of course the music can not at all be compared with ours. The women have such gracefulness, which through their dainty bodies also comes across differently [compared to] Europeans."
The posture of the women together with their tiny, pattering steps impressed Christiane, who said, "I believe that is a way of life and has to do with their philosophy. And also this discipline that permeates everywhere. We Europeans are more lax and also probably don't have such a big inner vision as the Asians have. What I mean is this cultural thoughtfulness."
