AUCKLAND, New Zealand—School teacher Ross MacFarquhar was one of many happy audience members who spoke to The Epoch Times after watching the Chinese Spectacular in Auckland on Friday April 18.
"I'm really enjoying the costumes and the colour that's there, and I've liked some of the more classical dances that are there," he said during intermission.
"The tea dance ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] I thought was really, really good. I thought it was very, very clever. The one where the girls had the blue wavy things ['Nymphs of the Sea'], I thought that was very effective and the last one with the guys there with the drums ['Drummers of the Tang Court']... were a bit of a macho sort of thing. I thought it was really well done."
Appreciative of the traditional aspect of the show, Mr MacFarquhar thought it was most unique. "So anything I see is classical, I like it. It's different and I came along tonight hoping it's something different, I guess... I'm quite happy so far."
Mr MacFarquhar continued: "It's an interesting culture, isn't it? And that's why we've come along tonight is to get an idea of some of the Chinese culture. It's interesting ... we sort of started commenting on the rough ride that the Olympic flame has had through London and Paris and saying it's good to see that. Hopefully by sort of drawing everybody's attention towards China, hopefully things there will improve, especially as the place is modernising and the people are getting more educated."
'Nice stories you can take into your everyday life'
Another happy viewer of the Spectacular was Mark Carroll, a TV contractor, who spoke about his impressions during the interval.
"The costumes, movements, the variety of the show, the different sounds, I have been really, really enjoying it." Mr Carroll, who's wife "immediately" wanted to see the show after receiving a flyer about it in their letterbox, was most impressed with "the different types of dance and movements".
"It has come over as nice stories, parts of which you can take into your everyday life. My partner and I are enjoying it. It has been really good."
'A good insight into Chinese mythology, history and culture'
For audience member Alexander Gallagher, the visual display and artistry was the most appealing. "Very impressive. Beautiful, beautiful dancers' costumes."
Alexander said it was hard to choose his favourite out of the dances. "Probably three of the dances were equally beautiful and equally impressive … [The show is] a good insight into Chinese mythology, history and culture."
