AUCKLAND, New Zealand—When Ms Shamila Singh, an Indian school teacher from Auckland, saw the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular advertised, she knew it was something she had to see. After seeing the show on its second night in Auckland on April 18, Ms Singh was not disappointed.
She explained that she had seen many other Chinese shows before, but none were as rich as the Spectacular.
"I was used to only... the dragon dance and the ribbon dance... and what I saw today goes way beyond that," she said.
Ms Singh believes that the Spectacular offers a taste of true, authentic Chinese culture, untainted by communist influences.
"I would say that the taste of the real, authentic, the Chinese domestic and I mean, going back pre-communism, you can see that."
She explained that other shows were often focused on the technical "gymnastics, rather than spiritualistic" elements. But the Spectacular offered a more "holistic experience".
"Especially in the backdrops and the use of the symbolism … going to the moon, in the 'Lady of the Moon'. All that spiritualism comes through," said Ms Singh.
Among her favourites were the drumming numbers and the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance'.
