AUCKLAND, New Zealand—"Fantastic" and "amazing" are what Simone Schollum would use to describe the Chinese Spectacular. when she was interviewed during interval time at the evening session in Auckland April 18.
The performances showcased 5000 years of Chinese heritage, Ms Schollum said, adding that she loved the drums, colour, expertise and movement.
"The whole package, it's just fantastic. I can't wait to go back in for the second half," she added. When asked what she liked about the performances, Ms Schollum said the lyrics on the backdrop helped her understand the soprano singers.
"Incorporating the movie behind and the dancers, especially when you are trying to learn about the culture; I think it's good the way they have done that," Ms Schollum said her husband, Paul, who also attended the show, was a director of REM Systems, the premier healthcare distributor in Australia, New Zealand, while she worked as a consultant to the firm
Apart from showing traditional Chinese culture, the Spectacular also showed modern communist oppression she said, giving an example of how bystanders could speak up for others and bring back traditional culture.
A similar message was conveyed in the dance called 'The Power of Awareness'. It portrayed a sunny day in China, where Falun Gong practitioners, a mother and daughter, spread the principles of truth, compassion and tolerance.
The two are interrupted by three communist policemen who begin beating them. However, this only serves to raise the indignation of bystanders who defend the mother and daughter. The play ends with multitudes learning the Falun Gong exercises.
"In Tibet, with what's happening over there, people are speaking out and what have you, and I think more people need to. China is a big country and it is going to take a lot of people to speak out for any change," Schollum said.
