AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Architect Peter Polanosky did not know what to expect when he saw the first performance of the Chinese Spectacular in New Zealand at the Aotea Centre, Auckland, April 17.

Peter, also a Buddhist, expressed a keen interest in Chinese culture and was impressed with the traditional Chinese cultural aspect portrayed by the performers.

"I didn't know what to expect. I quite like the cultural aspect of it. The spiritual side—I really enjoyed that. They talked a lot about the divine and showed angels, and Buddha," he said.

The Divine Performing Arts group is reviving ancient Chinese culture bringing to the stage a mixture of dance, ballet, drumming and song.

The principles of truth and compassion are conveyed throughout the show.

"There were some nice songs about truth, I like that kind of thing. I was surprised to see that in a Chinese show, "said Peter.

He said, "We hear that China is quite repressed, and they don't have any beliefs or are not allowed to have any beliefs.'

Tang drums from the most prosperous and celebrated period of Chinese civilization shook the theatre.

"I liked the drums, the drums were great. They were very loud and strong, very male," said Peter.

"I like the Chinese culture. I do house design and flow. I use Feng Shui in my work and I have a book called the I Ching. I use that too," he said.
