AUCKLAND, New Zealand—Caregiver Ho Chec Keong saw the premiere of the Chinese Spectacular at the Aotea Centre, in Auckland, April 17. "The part of the show I liked best is the Chinese historic story. I liked the story. The performers are telling a true story. The performers have a different style... they are expressive. It made me feel that it was realistic."
Mr Ho, who is of Chinese origin, but came to New Zealand from Malaysia, said he really loved the show.
"If I had a friend that didn't see the show I would tell him to come. This is my second time watching it. I've seen the show for the second time."
Mr Ho came to the show last year and was so impressed he made sure he had tickets this year.
'I'm Particularly Excited by Those Performances … Like the Drummers'
Mario Flores, a risk management consultant, also attended the show.
"This is a really nice show," he said, "especially the costumes. [They] are really nice, very colourful, well combined to the background of the show.
"I'm particularly excited by those performances where there's a little more action, like the drummers, or the more martial arts type of sequences. But all-in-all what I've seen … is pretty nice. Definitely!"
Mr Flores, said he thought the Divine Performing Arts company did a really good job of portraying traditional Chinese culture, and felt that they were doing something quite special.
"[They are] putting down a piece of art because it is not just a dance that doesn't have any meaning; it's really a small play," he said. "It is something they are trying to express through the dance."
When asked if there were any scenes that particularly stood out for him he responded enthusiastically: "I like the last piece; it's the one with the drummers ['Drummers of the Tang Court'].
"And there was another sequence where they were kind of portraying warriors, ['The Loyalty of Yue Fei']. That one I like very much as well."
