ADELAIDE, Australia—"I think it's fairly exquisite actually and I'm very fond of Chinese culture," said Christine Claire after watching the Chinese Spectacular in Adelaide.
"They were very flowing," she said of the dancers.
"Very lyrical, liked the costumes and I thought the female singer — her voice was extraordinary. Very, very deep and touching and very resonant and they have a good continuity, the dancers, and are very co-ordinated, so I'm very pleased to have come."
Ms Claire, a restauratrice, had some favourite performances. "I liked the Falun Gong one ['The Risen Lotus Flower'] and I liked the 'Water Sleeves' and I liked the Moon ['Lady of the Moon']. I liked that one a lot.
"I was a bit surprised by 'Truth Alone Sets You Free'," she said of the song performed by baritone Qu Yue, who received an encore after a huge round of applause from the captivated audience.
"I, being very interested in Chinese culture myself, I don't let the Chinese government spoil my appreciation for Chinese culture at all but I was a bit surprised by that [tenor performance] ... It's such a rich culture of high ethics and good values."
She also appreciated the sense of conviction in many of the scenes.
"I like the idea that people are going to stick to their guns, well, like one of the songs said. The song that the lady sang, do you remember what that one was ['May you Understand']?'Awareness breaks the spell of confusion,''Don't waver or delay in your steps,' 'Recover your true self' — so that's what I think the Falun Gong people are trying to do. You know they're standing firm to that and they are actually prepared to die for that."
