Fevola Kicks Seven as Blues Snap 14-game Losing Streak

MELBOURNE—Carlton spearhead Brendan Fevola booted seven goals as the Blues snapped a record-equalling losing streak of 14 games, beating arch-rival Collingwood by 23 points at the MCG.

The Blues, whose last victory came more than 10 months ago against Port Adelaide, led at every change to win 17.9 (111) to 13.10 (88).

It was also Brett Ratten's first victory as Blues' coach after nine straight defeats.

Fevola's seven-goal haul included three in the final quarter.

His seventh in the 17th minute was the sealer, with Fevola beating Nathan Brown and booting a spectacular goal on the run.

He also had time to set up another goal for youngster Shaun Grigg in the dying minutes as the Carlton fans in the huge crowd of 77,873 roared their approval.

Fevola has now kicked 15 goals in the last two matches against Essendon and the Magpies.

"After all the commiserations, it's good to have a celebration," said Fevola.

The Blues were also well served by key defender Jarrad Waite and rising midfield stars Bryce Gibbs and Marc Murphy.

Collingwood struggled all day to find a reliable marking option in attack, with Leon Davis, Dale Thomas and Brown (two apiece) their only multiple goalkickers.

Midfielders Dane Swan and Tarkyn Lockyer were among the Magpies' best.

Carlton midfielder Nick Stevens was reported in the third quarter for striking Magpies forward Alan Didak, although there appeared to be little in the incident.

The Blues are now in the box seat to win two straight games as they play hapless Melbourne next weekend at the MCG.

Bradshaw and Lions Rock Port Power

ADELAIDE—A Daniel Bradshaw-inspired Brisbane climbed off the canvas and sent Port Adelaide's season to never-before-seen depths with a stunning 20-point AFL victory at AAMI Stadium.

Trailing by as much as 47 points in the third term and combatting a torrential second-half downpour, the Lions rammed through 11 of the game's final 12 goals to win 18.16 (124) to 16.8 (104) in front of 25,205 dumbstruck Power supporters.

Port's defeat gives them a 0-4 start for the first time in their AFL history and the disheartening manner of the loss must cast a huge pall over their chances of even reaching the finals in 2008.

The Lions' revival was fuelled by the tireless midfield work of Simon Black and Luke Power but could not have been realised without a superb forward's game by Bradshaw (five goals).

His attacking compatriot Jonathan Brown started slowly on Alipate Carlile but was monstering his younger opponent by the finish, while Anthony Corrie (two goals) and Travis Johnstone also did well.

Chad Cornes and David Rodan were the best of a Port team that offered scarcely a yelp in the last term.

The Lions had lost experienced ruckman Jamie Charman prior to the bounce with a calf complaint and in his absence it was the Power centreline making merry as they sought a first win of the year.

Brendon Lade and Dean Brogan initiated numerous damaging clearances for the home side, with Rodan or one of the Cornes brothers generally on hand to run free with possession.

Port fired through the first four goals of the game and a fortunate late major to Chad Cornes - the ball ricocheted through off the goal umpire when it seemed destined to strike the post - gave the Power a 25-point quarter-time lead and seemed to indicate it would be their .

In the second quarter Port were inconsistent, but a trio of missed shots by Brown and Bradshaw scotched whatever momentum the Lions were developing and Port went into the main break well clear.

The rain swamped the stadium late in the third term and hung around long enough to make the Power's lead appear even more definitive.

Coach Mark Williams made for an animated sight at the last change huddle and his apparent unease proved to be well-founded.

Relying heavily on prime movers Black, Power and recruit Johnstone, the Lions swarmed all over Port in the last.

Johnstone and Cheynee Stiller managed particularly eye-catching majors and by midway through the term the lead had evaporated.

Brisbane's newfound status as the more likely winners stung Port into their only goal of the term through Shaun Burgoyne, but Brown and Bradshaw both added to their tally to make the result safe.

Cats Cruise Home Against Saints

MELBOURNE—Geelong remain unbeaten after overcoming a slow start to brush aside St Kilda and record an impressive 21.10 (136) to 13.16 (94) AFL victory at Telstra Dome.

After trailing by seven points at the first change, the Cats piled on 13.9 to 6.4 in the next two quarters to run away with the game, looking every bit as good as during their dominant 2007 premiership season.

For the Saints, it was the second round in succession they have been wiped away after starting well.

Last round they led the Western Bulldogs by 37 points at the first change before going down by 38 points.

They led 4.7 to 4.0 at the first change , with the difference in the number of scoring shots reflecting their early dominance in the midfield, while the Cats made the most of their limited early chances.

But, after quarter time, the Cats took control.

Brownlow medallist Jimmy Bartel, Joel Corey, Gary Ablett and Cameron Ling lifted their workrate in the centre to set up three goals in two-and-a-half minutes early in the second term and catapult their side into the lead.

It would have been four in four minutes had Paul Chapman not hit the post soon after.

The Saints took the ball the length of the ground from the resulting kick-out to set up a goal to Justin Koschitzke, which levelled the scores.

But the Cats scored the next three to assert their dominance and head into halftime with a 16-point lead.

After St Kilda kicked the opening goal of the third term, Geelong piled on six straight to open up a 46-point lead and put the result beyond doubt.

That run included some impressive highlights - a strong mark by youngster Tom Hawkins against Matt Maguire, a superb pick-up and right-foot goal by Ling and a goal on the burst from speedster David Wojcinski after the Cats had whisked the ball from defence.

Geelong had winners all over the ground, with fullback Matthew Scarlett magnificent against Fraser Gehrig and Koschitzke as a regular source of attacking moves.

Half-forwards Steve Johnson (four goals) and James Kelly (two goals) were both constantly dangerous, while big men Cam Mooney and Hawkins were also threatening in attack.

For the Saints, Lenny Hayes worked hard throughout the match to be his side's best, with Leigh Montagna and Luke Ball also useful through the midfield.

Nick Riewoldt worked hard in attack, kicking three goals and giving several others off, while Sam Fisher provided some run out of defence.

The Saints were not helped by some injury problems, with Robert Harvey coming off with a quadricep injury in the first term and Xavier Clarke helped off after a clash with Cats ruckman Trent West in the second, although both later returned.
