CANBERRA, Australia—Caroline, a former dancer, attended the final Canberra performance of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular with her mother Lucy, and friend Cynthia.
Cynthia recognised the talent of the dancers in the Divine Performing Arts tour group: "that is years and years and years of training," she said. "The footwork and the handwork, it's not something that you can do at university for three years or something!" she added.
Referring to the music, "I loved it!" said Cynthia. Both she and Caroline thought that there was a live orchestra located somewhere within the theatre. "It sounded real, the sound was just beautiful," said Caroline.
Lucy's favourite acts within the show were certainly the drumming pieces because they were "noisy and loud," she said.
Cynthia "loved the opening one", referring to the first act titled 'Descent of the Celestial Kings'. "It's just glorious, that one," she said.
"I suppose the things that I particularly liked were the different sort of ethnic groups that were portrayed," added Cynthia.
"Not just Chinese, but there were Mongolian representatives, Tibetan representatives, Buddhists, it was really, extremely good. And I liked that all over … and that was one of things that I felt it's producing, really wanting to produce and portray, that connection"
Cynthia spoke of how she read an article in the local newspaper, the Canberra Times the morning of the show about the pressure the Chinese Embassy had created to try and interfere with the Chinese Spectacular : "I loved the bit in the paper this morning, about the Chinese wanting to boycott it [the show], that pleases me very much. I'm strongly in disapproval of the Chinese embassy," she said.
