CANBERRA, Australia—Nura Alshibli, part of the delegation from the Iraqi Embassy attending the Chinese Spectacular, said she loved the show and expressed a wish for the Iraqi Embassy to become more active in supporting next year's events.
"I just didn't want it to end," Ms Alshibli said. "I was just telling my mum, I wished it would have lasted all night! It was fantastic. If they do it next year, I'll definitely come, surely. Fantastic."
Ms Alshibli said she learned a lot about Chinese culture from the show. "I never knew that drums and fans were so traditional in Chinese culture," she said. "I thought it was more of a modernised thing.
"[They should] keep on doing what they're doing. I think it brings more awareness. It's a good thing, cultural awareness, I think the more people learn about Chinese culture the better.
"I learned a lot. I enjoyed it very much, very much."
I Loved the Technique
Anna Chrysostomou, a primary school teacher, said she enjoyed experiencing a culture so different from her own.
"It's very different from what we've experienced before and that's what we're enjoying," Ms Chrysostomou said. "I don't know much Chinese culture, but what I've seen tonight I really enjoyed. I think it's important that we do know a little bit more. We come from a Greek background ourselves, so it's very different from the Greeks."
Her husband, Tom Chrysostomou, agreed with her. "It's very different from the sorts of dancing I normally do — line dancing. Very, very entertaining."
However, Ms Chrysostomou also said she recognised commonality between the two cultures. "There is a lot in common [between Chinese culture and Greek culture] because they are both cultures with a lot of background.
"I loved the costumes. I liked the fact that they explained what the dances are before they happen so that we can understand it a little bit better. I loved the technique, it is a very different sort of dance and I really, thoroughly enjoyed it. Colourful and beautiful."
