CANBERRA, Australia—The Chinese Spectacular was "really gorgeous" said Canberra journalist Julia Samaras, "especially the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance'".
"I thought the 'Mongolian Bowl Dance', was absolutely gorgeous and spectacular," Ms Samaras said after Canberra's opening show on Friday night. "I am very envious of the women's graceful movements; they were just so beautiful and elegant."
However, Ms Samaras had other favourites too. "I thought the sea nymphs' dance was visually stunning and just delightful, beautiful.
"I also loved the soprano. I thought her voice was amazing.
"I found the drumming quite exciting.
"[I] loved it, I thought it was really gorgeous," she said.
It Is Suited For Both the Young and Old
Rolf and his wife Carol saw the show with their two granddaughters after seeing an advertisement in a local newspaper. "We decided immediately that this was a good show for us, the oldies so to speak, and the younger generation. So it is suited for both the young and old," Rolf said.
"I thoroughly enjoyed it," Carol said. "Loved the costumes. I thought the sea nymphs were so delicate and beautiful the way they simulated the ocean. Their scarves, their material, it was beautiful the way it rippled.
"Every number was really nice in terms of the costumes and colours, and the dance movements," said Rolf, a retired IT worker. "I admired of course the ladies that could carry the tea cup on their head ['Mongolian Bowl Dance'] and not drop it."
Their granddaughter Georgia said she most liked the drumming movements. "It was really loud and lively," she said.
A 'new side' of Chinese Culture
Jane Keogh, who cares for her mother full time, said she saw a new side of Chinese culture in the Spectacular.
"It showed me Chinese culture that I have never been introduced to before," Ms Keogh said. "The beauty of it, the form of dance was beautiful."
"I also think it had a very strong and simple message," she said of the Falun Gong pieces, adding that she did not expect this. "But I suppose, given the historical circumstances of Falun Gong in China at the moment, I was impressed by the fact that they got their message across. Behind the persecution, there is all this hope."
The show was "fantastic" said university students Justin Eschauzier and Stephanie Arnold.
"I didn't know what to expect, but it was great," Ms Arnold said. "The one where they had cups on their heads — that was awesome."
"The drums were really cool," Mr Eschauzier said. "And some of the singing, the last guy [tenor Hong Ming]."
"Fantastic, we really loved it."
