CANBERRA, Australia—The Chinese Spectacular came to Canberra on Friday April 11. The Canberra Theatre was filled with a captivated audience.
Mr Kimmo Vennonen, treasurer of a community radio station, commented on his impressions of the show during the interval.
"[It's] pretty good. I thought I would have trouble staying awake being a Friday night … it's been good. I haven't fallen asleep yet and that's something."
Surprised that the show exceeded his expectations, Mr Vennonen said: "I didn't think it would be so full on and colourful really, it has a really good blend of various things; it was really great.
"I really liked the colours in it actually and the visual aspect. I mean, I liked the dance and music as well, but it was really well done basically."
When asked what performances he liked most so far, he responded with three favourites: "I think the first one ['Descent of the Celestial Kings'] was really nice, the one in blue with the waves and the sea ['Nymphs of the Sea'] and also the last one ['Drummers of the Tang Court'].
"The drummers were great, because it had a more traditional Chinese sort of feel to it and it got away from the orchestral music. I enjoy more the folky and traditional side of it … I don't know how much the orchestral music is part of Chinese culture. I don't know, I haven't been there… but it was good. Well done."
"I guess I'm still getting used to it", said Mr Vennonen of the moral stories portrayed in the show. "I think it is sort of different from our culture having those so up front sort of messages. Like the ... baritone and piano and soprano performances were; I guess it is a different way of looking at things … you know it's just different. It is not a communist (way) or anything, just a Chinese way of communicating that's all. So its fine, I'm just getting used to it really"
Considered a show for all ages, many children have been among the audiences of the Chinese Spectacular throughout it's world tour. "… I should have brought my kids along really, people are really cynical they don't really want to go out that much they think it is a risk, or something. I think it was really good, especially for kids."
