BUCHAREST, Romania—Engineering is a practical profession, yet a Romanian engineer responded to the Chinese Spectacular like a mystic or a poet.
"I felt suddenly very relaxed as I have passed to another dimension, so I'll not use big words here. And I left charged just as I would have left after a prayer."
Currently playing at the National Theater in Bucharest, the Spectacular showcases the essence of China's traditional culture and values in a lavish production that has captivated audiences worldwide.
Engineer Mihai Popescu and his wife Grabriela, a biotherapist, found the Spectacular astonishing. Mr. Popescu said the pair had watched a few broadcasts about the 5,000-year old civilization. When they saw the performance "we have been amazed to discover now something completely different" from what they had seen on TV.
He wished to learn more. "It's a field which has to be explored." He said he felt he was not qualified to judge the authenticity of the performance, because he did not know a great deal about Chinese culture.
However, Mr. Popescu said, "I'm convinced it's something completely different, compared to what was transmitted from mass media."
Mrs. Popescu has studied energetic healing and traditional medicine for her career as a biotherapist. Because of her work, she said, "I'm a little closer to Chinese spheres." She respects the achievements of the Chinese people. Aside from her understanding of traditional healing and culture, she felt a modern twinge.
"I'm a bit jealous of how perfect these performers look, not a bit of fat, in order to perform such movements they must have followed a strict discipline."
She encouraged her husband not to concern himself about his lack of familiarity with Chinese culture, which didn't matter; he should simply see and hear and experience everything in the show.
She watched with great attention. "I watched the costumes with a binocular, they are just perfect. I watched every detail, including shoes…everything is silk, it's extraordinary. I'm impressed and it made me happy."
Mr. Popescu enlarged upon his poet's response, describing the feeling like that after prayer. "In the same time the preacher has convinced me that he has given me something for my soul."
Upon hearing that the Chinese Embassy had tried to stop the show, he was not surprised, saying that the recent developments in Tibet showed how intolerant the Chinese Communist Party is.
