TAMPERE, Finland—Lucky theatre-goers were treated to a hearty helping of traditional Chinese culture when they attended the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular Monday evening in Tampere.

Andre Ilobon and Alexandra Koreciko, fellow researchers at Tampere's Univeristy of Technology, were impressed by the unique glimpse into ancient Chinese culture offered by the Spectacular.

"It was very nice, a very colorful show. It brought a lot of emotion. I have a very good impression of it. We enjoyed it very much," said Andre.

"I liked it also, especially the traditional Chinese violin. It was a beautiful show," added Alexandra.

Andre and Alexandra both enjoyed the special effects employed by Divine Performing Arts to transport viewers back in time. The use of high-tech three-dimensional backdrops to lend animated lifelike scenery to the performance was particularly notable for Andre.

"There was a nice interaction between the actors and the performance on the screen," he said.

Alexandra enjoyed the use of rippling silks to simulate waves of water in the piece, "Nymphs of the Sea".

Andre was particularly impressed with the "combination of dances and solo performances of the artists. "It was a very good approach."

His favorite performance of the evening, however, was Victory Drums. "Quite energetic; it's really powerful and brings up the audience."

They both agreed that they would visit Chinese dance and theatre again in the future. "It's always nice to see something different…an uncommon performance," Andre said.

The New York-based Divine Performing Arts has two performance groups touring simultaneously in Europe and Australia. By the end of its international tour, the Spectacular will have played to a total live audience of 650,000. The tour spans 65 cities on four continents.
