BRATISLAVA, Slovakia—“I think that this is a very wonderful meeting of the cultures!” enthused Igor Sebla. “I'm a step dance instructor here in Slovensko at the University of Musical Arts. I also teach dance at a local art school.” Sebla was praising the Chinese Spectacular which performed at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, Slovakia. The packed audience gave it a long, enthusiastic standing ovation.
“You see how greatly the audience here appreciates what we saw, how they are praising the performances with their applause,” continued Sebla. “And these dancers, these young dancers, I think they are giving very beautiful, first-class performances. This is such a great opportunity to see something truly different—not the same as we see here in Europe. I think that this is very wonderful, a meeting of the cultures, and this can help us to understand each other.”
Asked which performances were his favorite, he said, “The water fairies [the piece “Nymphs of the Sea”]. I liked the idea of ‘water’ and working with the fans, you know, this idea of how to show water, the water element, and the timing and rhythm, because my domain is step dance, which emphasizes rhythm. I was also really taken by the last number, “Resounding Drums.” The drums are different and interesting in every culture. For sure, I have seen many inspirational things for my work here in these performances.”
“I’m from Bratislava, I was born here in Bratislava, Slovensko, Central Europe,” he said. “I think that this performance shows something of the great culture that these great Chinese artists came from, to share our different cultures. This can support our understanding of each other's culture.”
After Bratislava, the Spectacular will carry on to Prague for more shows next week. A total of 35 shows will be seen in 14 European countries.
