VIENNA—Andrea Hubeny from Klosterneuburg has studied church music, plays the organ, and teaches piano and singing lessons. On Thursday, March 6, Hubeny, along with several of her pupils and friends, attended the Chinese Spectacular at the Vienna Stadthalle.
Vienna is known as the music metropolis. Asked if she felt there is any link to Chinese music, Ms. Hubeny replied, "Yes, I somehow believe that. Beautiful music can be heard in many other places. Especially since Asian music is different—something very interesting, novel, and a wonderful enrichment of our Western music."
She added, "This music is totally different from Western music; also in a perceptive sense, it is very mellow and elegant. I think that Western music has different forms of expression. But the connection that I noticed, I think, also incorporates Western effects, which made it very interesting to the audience.
"For us, this encounter with Chinese music and Chinese dance is something very novel—totally different from our ballet or our kind of music."
Responding to a theatergoer's comment that one of the singers has "light in her voice," Ms.Hubeny said, "I think that everyone who sings has his or her vibrancy or displays his or her charisma. In my thinking, one can express oneself much better [in song], and it touches the soul much more.
"I love listening to a singer. Especially, as a singer myself, I'm always delighted when the audience enjoys my song. Therefore, I often invite everyone, even my youngest students, to sing a lot because it caresses the soul and also fosters the human character."
Ms. Hubeny said that she liked the contralto the best: "The pitch of her voice is something that we hear very seldom. She did it wonderfully. I really was impressed by her."
After today's show in Vienna, the "Spectacular "will play in Bratislava on Sunday, and move on to Prague for more shows next week. A total of 35 shows will be seen in 14 European countries.
