VIENNA, Austria—The Vienna State Opera's principal dancer says she was inspired by the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular which played at Vienna's stately Stadthalle on Thursday.

Kathrin Czerny pointed out the differences between classical Chinese dance and ballet.

"The girls dance very sensitively and I liked their arms and the movement of the fingers," she said.

"They use the arms more often or move more with the upper body and not with the legs. We dance on point and lift the legs higher, and they just move with the upper body especially with the arms and the fingers," she said.

Czerny enjoyed the ancient Chinese myths portrayed in the show and the brilliantly coloured costumes, all of which are handmade.

"It's a very colourful and inspiring program. What I liked most is that you learn a bit about the culture of China and learn a few stories about locals."

Her favourite performances were "Nymphs of the Sea" and the fan dance, "Lightness and Grace."

"They're different stories, it's colourful and lots of costumes. What I also liked was the change of dancing and singing, and the speakers in between." She said the evening went quickly. "It's fresh and colourful, that's what I think about it."

The Vienna State Opera is the oldest theatrical institution in the German-speaking world, dating back to the beginning of the 18th century.

After another show in Vienna on Friday, the Spectacular will play in Bratislava on Sunday, carrying on to Prague for more shows next week.
