TAMPERE, Finland—Many came to Tampere Hall in Finland on Sunday for the matinee performance of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular which showcases traditional Chinese culture. "I am very impressed with the dancing, singing, the music — everything. Very good," said Tom Wishart, an English teacher from the U.K., who saw a poster for the event a few weeks prior.
"I am interested in Chinese culture. I'm trying to study Chinese in my spare time — that's one of my main reasons I came." Wishart noted his appreciation in learning about the ancient Chinese characters versus its modern form.
Wishart mentioned a few pieces in particular that he enjoyed most. "From a strictly stylish point of view, it was the Mongolian Bowl Dance. It is very powerful and deep."
He was especially impressed by Drummers of the Tang Court, Victory Drums and the erhu, a Chinese two-stringed instrument known for its wide range of notes and haunting sound.
"The two pieces with the drums were excellent and the Chinese violin," he said. "I was also interested to see the history, and to have a different perspective of China's present political situation and how its culture is not able to flourish."
The Spectacular will play in Tampere for two days before returning to Stockholm for an encore performance on April 3.
