TAMPERE, Finland—Dr. Paula Kuulusa, who lives in Mäntää, 100 kilometres from Tampere, took the train to see the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Tampere Hall on Sunday and to visit her son.

A retired dentist, Kuulusa said she now she has more time for cultural events and she is very glad about that. She has been to many different cultural events in Tampere Hall.

"Our culture is very important for me. I´m proud that we in Tampere have the opportunity to get different kinds of cultural shows like this one. I think they are good artists and they are working hard."

When she visited China 20 years ago she saw a dance show, but she thinks there is no comparison between the Spectacular and the show she saw in China.

"I like the music, the dance and the dresses [in the Spectacular ]. Everything is so rich in colors" she said, adding that she started studying Chinese two years ago. The teacher only speaks Chinese and there is a person translating for them. They are learning to speak and to write the Chinese characters.

Kuulusa said she almost missed the show because it took place on the first day of the time change in Finland and she hadn't changed her watch.

After the show she was going to her son's home to spend the night. "I will tell him that the show is great," she said.

Tampere is located in Birkaland in western Finland, and is the largest inland city in the Nordic region. It was established in 1779 by Swedish King, Gustav III on a fast-moving river linking two lakes, Nasijarvi and Pyajjarvi. At that time, a dam was constructed on the river from which the city derived its name. In the mid-19th century, Tampere became a center for textile production, earning the nickname "Manchester of the North." Today, the city is becoming known for its rich variety of cultural attractions and is home to mobile phone giant, Nokia.
