MELBOURNE, Australia—For Italian Irma Duante on her 60th birthday outing, the Chinese Spectacular final showing in Melbourne was the perfect gift from her Vietnamese friend who accompanied her to the show.
"Oh, I think it was fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I loved it because it wasn't just one story, but the actual story of the whole China, so I really enjoyed it."
The Divine Performing Arts company performed many numbers on the stage of the State Theatre, such as 'Descent of the Celestial Kings', 'The Loyalty of Yue Fei', and 'Victory Drums'. "The drums, there's something about the drums that just touched my heart. I loved the whole show, but the drums just caught me that little bit more."
Ms Duante, a member of the Yarra Valley Multicultural Group, discussed what she learned about Chinese culture. "Actually, a lot that I didn't know. I didn't realise the ballet, that the acrobatics were taken off from the ballet, from the Chinese ballet [classical Chinese dance], I didn't realise that. There's a lot of things I didn't realise about it. So it was an eye-opener. Apart from the beautiful costumes and music and everything else, it was an eye-opener about the culture as well.
Ms Duante expressed that compared to other shows she'd seen, "the culture really stood out more" in the Chinese Spectacular.
"I really would advise people to come and see it because it's really an eye-opener."
