MELBOURNE, Australia—This is the second time that housewife, mother of four and grandmother of five, Guiolanda Kondoyiannis, has seen the Chinese Spectacular performance. She enjoyed last year's show so much, that she came back again.
"It was a spectacular performance— very colourful, very enjoyable. I saw it last year and I was very moved by the Tiananmen Square dance performance. I went there [to China] for 12 months. It's thought-provoking," said Guiolanda.
"I feel that when going to a performance like this, you get more out of it than reading a book," she explained. "You understand more history from watching the motion of the dance. It's something you've got to experience tacitly. From seeing it and listening to music, it's more than when you just read it. It's a very tacit experience."
Like many other audience members, Guiolanda seemed to be touched on a deeper level by some of the themes. The narrative of people standing up against the persecution of Chinese people who practise Falun Gong by China's own regime moved her to tears.
"I liked all the performances. I felt very moved with the Falun Gong performance with the three dancers, it actually moved me to tears. That was basically it, it was a very moving, thought-provoking performance."
Guiolanda felt morality has been declining in our modern society and believes that it's a time to listen to one's conscience.
"I feel this is the sort of thing we need, because everyone needs to unite, be they housewives, doctors or mechanics. We need to unite and stand up against the persecution of the Chinese people. And not just the Chinese people, but Africans as well. Whether it's anywhere in the world, we need to be compassionate to our fellow beings and not turn a blind eye, because this is going all over the world and this performance made me aware of it, and that's how I feel."
