PARIS—The third Chinese Spectacular performance in Paris by Divine Performing Arts ended with huge success on Saturday. Actors and audiences interacted warmly, and loud waves of applause broke out from the audience from time to time. Among the audience, many were overseas Chinese living in France.
Zhang Jian was a chief leader of the students picketing in Tiananmen Square during the student movement in 1989. He was detained and then managed to escape from China. He thinks the Chinese Spectacular is bringing hope to people facing a dark and difficult environment in China today.
He said of the show, "It is wonderful. I have come to the show for three years. I have never been moved and shaken like this before." He especially liked the program where bystanders stand up against the persecution of religious believers. He said:"People often ignore the persecutions that are happening around us; however, this show directs people toward a brighter road, that is, to resist persecution, and that light will defeat darkness."
Zhang Jian felt inspired and encouraged by the two drum performances. He said:"The drums are amazing, the precision of the drumbeat is impressive. It was very exciting. Apart from the astounding artistic culture of the Chinese drum, the upright beat makes me feel like burning with righteous indignation." He said that the drumbeat implies advancing forward, and embodies an expression of confidence that light will triumph over darkness.
