MELBOURNE, Australia—Des Pole is a retired farmer who lives in Bendigo, Victoria. He travelled with his wife Loreto to watch the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular for the matinee performance on Saturday.
"The opening scene was stunning, because we were looking down on it. And the drumming ... just blows your mind. And I don't know the name of the two-stringed violin [erhu], but it just gets into your heart," he said.
Both Des and Loreto have a deep respect for the Chinese culture and especially the cuisine. Their home town, Bendigo, is the home of many early Chinese settlers who arrived during the Gold Rush in the 1850s. It is renowned for owning the longest and oldest Imperial Dragon in the Southern Hemisphere.
The couple expressed that they have longed to visit China for many years and they feel the urgency of travelling before too many of the ancient treasures have been lost.
They described the Chinese people as being "graceful and patriotic" and said that the Chinese Spectacular left them in a "good mood."
"It's just beautiful," Loreto said.
"We had to travel 140 km. to get here, and it was well worth it."
