MELBOURNE, Australia—A former Australian government employee has described the Chinese Spectacular as most enjoyable and very "calming."
Alister Hawker, who worked for the government for 30 years before his retirement, said the Spectacular was more tranquil "in that sort of Asian way," than other shows they had seen.
He is now retired and was at the Chinese Spectacular with his wife Alison, who said that the couple often go to the theatre and enjoy travelling to see different cultures from around the world.
He said the show was most enjoyable. "It was very, what's the word, calming."
Mrs Hawker said the Spectacular showcased many different types of Chinese culture. She said they often go to the theatre and enjoyed traveling to look at different cultures from around the world.
"We haven't been to China yet, but we're going in about four week's time, so this is a bit of an introduction," she said.
Mr. Hawker said Spectacular was more tranquil "in that sort of Asian way," than other shows they had seen.
They said that they both enjoyed the introductions for the performances, giving the a background to the particular aspects of Chinese culture and history.
Mr. Hawker said the that erhu was very good and very unusual. The erhu is a traditional Chinese violin renowned for its haunting tones.
"First off, it was quite sedate, but towards the end she got into the rhythm more, it was quite amazing with just two strings."
He said his favourite was 'Victory Drums' describing it as energizing.
"I liked the drums. I think that there should have been more drums. I love percussion. It was really energizing."
