STOCKHOLM, Sweden—The Divine Performing Arts' Chinese Spectacular has hit the stage in Sweden. People from all backgrounds have flocked to see authentic Chinese culture being brought to life. The Spectacular played at the Circus Theater Tuesday night in Stockholm. David Persson, project manager in the Swedish Defense Department attended with his wife and enjoyed the window into true Chinese culture.
"I haven't seen a show like this before. It was very nice. I haven't been in Asia but this was an opportunity to take some impressions from the culture there. That was the main reason, to see something from a part [of the world] where you don't visit."
"There were two things that I liked the best. [One is] the movement of the dancers. They really were able to be smooth and just flow over the scene. I like that style very much. And also the instrument player, that girl with the 2-stringed instrument [the erhu], was extremely beautiful, I think. I would like to hear more from that kind."
"The show was obviously based on traditional styles and values. I can't differentiate where it came from whether its Confucianism or whatever but it's obviously a traditional Chinese style, so it's nice to see."
Reports have been confirmed that Chinese Embassies, including the one in Sweden, have tried to block the Chinese Spectacular from being performed. Phone calls to MPs are common, as well as letters and pressure on the venue.
Mr. Persson condemned such behavior. "It's childish of the Chinese government to try to stop it in a democracy like Sweden, obviously. But I can see that obviously they don't like it but trying to stop it is a totally different matter, I think. It's fairly harmless from my point of view."
"It was a nice experience. I had never seen Chinese dance before so now I've seen it. I can recommend it to my friends."
