The Dodge Nitro comes in three trim levels: (the Nitro/RT, Nitro SLT, and Nitro SXT). The trims are basically the same, except for a few differences. For example, the Nitro/RT has a 4.0-Liter SOHC V-6 with 5-speed automatic transmission. The Nitro SXT has 9 models that include the 3.7-Liter SOHC V-6 with either a 6-speed manual or available 4-speed transmission. I drove the V-6, 4-speed automatic for a week.

Nitro offers eight beautiful exterior colors, and my Nitro SXT was wrapped in a bright silver metallic clear coat.

The Nitro is an attention getter at first glance. A combination of high-tech-style and comfort propels Nitro to the top of the envy list for all who see this vehicle.

The 4WD and best powertrain combination in its class make Nitro a pleasure to drive, while the ability to change from 2WD to 4WD on the fly makes for added convenience.

The cost of the Nitro SXT 4X4 was just a little over $24,000. Sirius Satellite Radio and Dash CD/mp3 player and the Navigator System were included at this price, as well as an electronic stability program and inter-lock-4- wheel-disc-brakes.

Inside, the Nitro had tilt steering wheel, speed-sensitive power locks, rear dome lamp, and a rear 60/40 folding split reclining seat. Remote start capability gives you a head start at cooling or warming the cabin before you get in the vehicle. Just a push on the key fob button will not only start the vehicle, but allows drivers to adjust the temperature control system from up to 300 feet away.

YES Essentials seat fabric can be added, which can resist stains and odors by beading spills for easy cleaning.

Pressure monitor warning lamp, independent front/five-link solid rear axle suspension, Sentry Key, power exterior mirrors/windows/locks, and Trailer Sway Control are standard features that add a swagger to Nitro's new boldness.

The feature that I found most pleasing was the size of the large headlamps attached to the grille for a custom fit and finished appearance. This seemed to provide a well-balanced beam of light on the road and added strength for my nighttime peripheral vision.

The Nitro averaged about 19 miles to the gallon on city and country roads. Nitro is sleek, sophisticated and built with an interstrength endurance. But as gas prices increase dramatically, Dodge must build this splendid vehicle with a much higher gas mileage capacity.
