HAMBURG, Germany—The premiere of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Hamburg's Theatre on the Harbor on Monday evening brought a hearty helping of traditional Chinese culture to an impressed audience.

Hamburg local Andrea Jesumann, a sales manager at the Maritim Hotel, thoroughly enjoyed the show.

"I really liked it. I have never seen such a show and I found everything like a fantasy. Wonderful music. I was impressed with the dancers, truly very beautiful," said Jesumann.

She said she liked the drum dance the best. "It was smashing. There was a lot of rhythm there and it was very powerful -- truly fantastic.

"But I liked all the dances, the atmosphere and what the dances wanted to convey. It was received very well. One also noticed that the audience was truly touched. Overall, they moved with a lot of energy and power."

Jesumann appreciated the colorful handmade costumes and the unique, high tech backdrops.

"The costumes are beautiful, very inventive. They glittered beautifully and the colors were beautiful. The backdrop harmonized with each individual scene and one had the feeling that there would be something new just around the corner. It was a great interaction of costumes, performers and music. I can only recommend it to everyone."

She also commented on a scene in the Spectacular that portrays a contemporary tragedy in China: the persecution of Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline currently undergoing brutal suppression by the Chinese communist regime.

"I truly liked it. The dancers brought it out well — what I mean is the fight for freedom of opinion and expression. It was beautiful, and one understood what the dance wanted to convey. The fundamental issue was very well understood."

Jesumann added that the Spectacular provides an opportunity for people to learn about Chinese culture.

"With such shows one brings Chinese culture to the West. This is a venue for Europeans to learn about and understand better that culture. I think that the situation in China is very critical at times, but it also very nice that an effort is under way for Europeans to understand it."
