HAMBURG, Germany—Ruth Diergardt, who attended the Hamburg premiere of the Chinese Spectacular on Monday evening at the Theater in the Harbor, thoroughly appreciated the show.

"It is beautiful colorful, one understands a lot about traditional culture, which today one is no longer able to see," said Diergardt, a registered nurse.

"I find it correct that this is being preserved. I believe in contrast to traditional German culture, the traditional Chinese culture truly has something to offer. I enjoyed the water performance with the fans most."

But she also enjoyed the other dance performances. "They really have it down pat."

Diergardt, who comes from Rothenburg, is an active artist in puppet plays and theater. She was impressed by the diversity in the Spectacular.

"It is nice to pick up on those different energies, for example, that one piece with the water or others that portray stories, those are totally different forms.

"I also like the background, the connection of men and machine, from human performance and computer that very beautifully complemented each other. The announcements were also quite amusing, the instrument was amusing, with which they imitated animal voices."

Diergard added that she liked how the show portrayed in some of its acts the persecution of Falun Gong, a contemporary tragedy currently unfolding in China.

„How people are being unjustifiably punished for their belief, which can actually not be that bad, and to say 'good will prevail.' I find that particularly fantastic and I myself work on that a little as well. I use puppets to wrap difficult messages in a fairy tale like package, so that everybody can comprehend it.

"I believe that this is an all-important aspect…. With these beautiful means such as theater, art and performance to convey difficult messages so that everyone can understand, one can also resolve something positively. If we all hang together, then the dark deeds cannot prevail. I truly find that to be a very important message."
