Medsafe is monitoring a drug used in dialysis and heart patients after 19 deaths and hundreds with allergic-type reactions in the United States and similar reactions in Germany.
Baxter International has been implicated in the US-sold heparin injections, which source their raw heparin ingredients from China.
But the Federal Drug Administration would not say whether RotexMedica GmbH, which supplies heparin in Germany; also source their raw products from China.
China is the world's leading source of heparin, which is derived from pig intestines and used to thin dialysis patients' blood.
The FDA suspects a contaminant to be the likely cause of the hundreds of allergic-type reactions in the US.
Dr Stewart Jessamine, Interim Manager, Medsafe said there has been no reports of adverse reactions to the heparin products available in New Zealand.
"We are aware of the issue in the United States and are monitoring the reports and names of the companies involved as they are released."
"But none of the heparin products sold in New Zealand have been implicated in the recalls initiated by the US Food and Drug Administration."
In Germany the medical authorities are recalling the heparin from RotexMedica GmbH.
New Zealand Kidney Foundation Medical Director & Acting Chairman Associate Professor Kelvin Lynn is not aware of any problems with heparin in New Zealand.
If New Zealand's supply of heparin was contaminated patients would very quickly display adverse reactions because the drug runs from the dialysis machine straight into their bodies.
"You can be assured that dialysis patients in New Zealand have not found any concerns with heparin," he said.
