BERLIN—Ursula Popiolek, the CEO of the Memorial Library in Honor of the Victims of Communism/Stalinism in Berlin, said during intermission that the Chinese Spectacular performance "touched my heart and soul."
After the last curtain of the March 16th matinee at the International Congress Center in Berlin (ICC Berlin), Ms. Popiolek said, "The scene in the prison was very potent, bridging to what will come in due time. I can imagine that these people do not belong in a country that is governed by a dictatorship because they are true individuals."
She said the message about Falun Gong came through. "In the scene with the child ['The Power of Awareness'], one sees the uniformity of the dictatorship, the poor clothing, the row houses, the monotony and the boredom. Then, the two appeared—the woman and her little daughter. And suddenly there was affection, compassion, and warmth—clearly noticeable. That which persuades [the audience] came from the mercy. That persuades, as there is no agitation, no order from above, the simplicity, no dictator who gives orders." In order to express her personal reaction to what she had seen, she said, "I am very sensitive to this because I lived in a similar system in the former GDR [German Democratic Republic]. Communism is the most inhuman system in this world!"
She recalled memories from her past after watching the show. "That egalitarianism turns people into robots who no longer know about diversity, have lost their roots and can no longer connect to any tradition. They want to have a pliable crowd that can be manipulated. Yes, I have experienced it," she said, referring to her experiences living under a communist dictatorship.
"Here alone, the diversity can be seen in the colors, where there is no dictator or godlike person that is worshipped. Instead, nature, tradition, and humanity are exalted. This is the message that I received."
