BERLIN—Rainer Jahn, the managing director of a pharmaceutical company, and his wife Manuela, attended the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Berlin's International Congress Center on Sunday, March 15.
Jahn was impressed with the entire show, especially with the two hosts introducing each scene in Chinese and German and by a Chinese and German.
"What I mostly liked about the show, and which is extraordinary, was the discussion between the hosts before each scene. How they presented the scene was fascinating."
What was most "original was that the gentlemen switched into Chinese language and the lady into German. She spoke German perfectly, with a nice Chinese accent, which I liked very much. I like listening to people speaking in other languages, even though I don't understand it."
Jahn added that also enjoyed 'Drummers of the Tang Court' and 'Victory Drums'.
"I liked the drums very much, because I find the sound of drums fascinating. Everything was so nice, including the colors. Wasn't it typical Chinese?"
"What was also very interesting was that the music was not typical Chinese music, it sometimes sounded European, although it harmonized with the Chinese music very well. I really like it."
There are short episodes from some of the scenes on the Divine Performing Arts website to give people a preview.
"I sampled a little of the performance on Internet. Yet, I expected it to be more Chinese, especially the set-up, something like the Shaolin [martial artists from the Shaolin Monastery]. This show is more cultural and the other one more action. I prefer this one."
Manuela enjoyed the scene 'Nymphs of the Sea' and said, "I like the water fairies, the way they present water by the movement of the cloth."
Maren Klippert, another member of the audience said, "I liked the drums and the contralto singer. I liked the voice and was glad to be here as one doesn't hear that sound so often."
