Nobel Laureate Reinhard Selton at the Chinese Spectacular in Taipei (The Epoch Times)

The Shen Yen Chinese Spectacular in Taipei has attracted a long list of high profile officials and other VIPs. Among them was Economics Nobel Laureate, Reinhard Selten who attended the afternoon show on March 16 at Taipei's International Convention Center.

The German-born professor said it was "a very impressive performance."

"There are great differences between Chinese and Western culture, as they have different origins. But it's very difficult to summarize those differences," said Selton. However, he also thinks that Chinese and western cultures are not completely different, "because in ancient times, Chinese civilization was very rich, and China was strong, so many things from Chinese culture were passed to Europe, and influenced European culture. Therefore, those Chinese style paintings are actually not at all strange for us."

Shelton said was impressed by the images of Buddhas, Taos and Gods. "I was really fascinated. It gives you a very ancient and historical feeling."

"The whole style is very interesting," he continued, describing the background images and how they sometimes also had movement, which he found "surprising."

"You have a very slow feel and then the dancing and the music were very impressive. The music maybe [I liked] the most, I mean it is traditional Chinese, which I like very much…. I find it very moving."

Shelton also like the show's arrangement being comprised of "many short pieces in succession... I like this very much. I usually don't much appreciate dancing, but [in this show] it's very good."

Professor Selten and two colleagues won the Nobel Prize in 1994 for their analyses of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games. Selten currently runs the Laboratory for Experimental Economics at the University of Bonn.
