BERLIN—German Member of Parliament Petra Bierwerth, who attended the Divne Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at Berlin's International Congress Centre had high praise for the unique culture show.

"I can only recommend to all who have the opportunity to see the show to take it in," said Bierwerth, who's with the Social Democratic Party.

"The show's dances and songs demonstrate the varieties of artistic expressions existing in ancient Chinese culture, particularly the dances."

Bierwerth added that the songs and dances in the Spectacular bring out "the inherent culture and the deeper meanings" of China's 5,000-year history.

She is aware that the authentic traditional culture portrayed in the Spectacular embodies much of what was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. While on a visit to China this year, Bierwerth discovered that not much of the ancient culture exists today.

"That is something I really bemoaned; that is why I like this show that is trying to resurrect ancient customs and bring those closer to Europeans, something I think is important."

Bierwerth commented on the disappearance of the "old China."

"We [visitors] were sad to see Beijing having become just another modern city, with many skyscrapers, and not much of the old China left. That is lamentable.

"The show accomplishes a two-fold purpose: to awaken interest in the old China, and a desire to deal with China on a more intense basis. I think it is important for us Europeans to deal a bit more with things concerning China, particularly in light of the upcoming Olympic Games, to think with a more open mind."
