BERLIN—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular successfully premiered in Berlin on March 14 despite a 10-day transport strike in the city. Staged at the Internationales Congress Centre, the Spectacular ended with standing ovation and three curtain calls.

Mr. Chen Youshen, Head of the Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Berlin, was highly impressed with the show.

"This is the first time I watched the Divine Performing Arts show. It was a great show. Everything about it was great, including stage effect, rhythm, music, costume design, as well as the performers' professional level and skills. It didn't feel heavy or boring. There is a German expression for it — lebhaft (lively)," Chen said.

Chen especially enjoyed the drumming acts and noted the work that went into the show.

"The 'Drummers of the Tang Court' struck me the most. The drummers' formation showed the power of the great Tang dynasty. It was wonderful. Apparently, there was elaborate design and thought behind the production to make the Divine Performing Arts performance incorporate the modern times. The result is very pleasing. I am lost for words to describe my feelings."

He added that audience reaction proved that people understood and truly appreciated the performances.

"The response from the audience proves that there is no ethnic or cultural barrier or obstacle to such a beautiful art. The applause tells you whether the performance is good or whether audience enjoys the performance. The applause reflects the show's level of popularity. I believe that the western audience understands the show. Many expressions of arts and culture need no verbal communications. I believe that they must feel the same way I do. This type of performance will spread the Chinese culture quickly."

Chen was transferred from Vienna to Berlin just seven months ago. He was pleased to hear that the show was warmly received in Vienna as well.

"I believe that I would have watched the show in Vienna if I wasn't transferred here. It was great. No language can do justice to the performance. I truly feel it was great."
