PARIS—The grand Palais des Congrès in Paris came alive with the sights and sounds of China on Saturday with the Divine Performing Arts presentation of the famed Chinese Spectacular.
As the show closed, enthusiastic applause brought the performers back for three curtain calls.
"I am fascinated," said Maxime Gremetz, Deputy of the Somme, president of the Communist Party and republican of the regional group of Picardy.
"I have already seen shows in China, however tonight it is something that I had never seen before anywhere else. It is both ancient and modern in today's reality…extraordinary."
"I enjoyed the drums, they are very powerful," added Gremetz, who attended the matinee.
Jean Olivier Armand, a specialized educator/instructor, said he found the Spectacular to be "very colorful" and praised the performers for achieving such a high aesthetic level.
"I really enjoy Asian cinema, and here I find similar features…the postures, the movements. The aesthetic aspect is what I like the best, because it is so difficult to do, almost inaccessible. It is something difficult to achieve considering the huge task at hand in presenting such a visual delight," said Armand.
"I will eagerly come back next year."
Gyslaine Laiguillon, who also attended Saturday's matinee, said she especially enjoyed the grand-scale dances.
"I really enjoyed the show, most of all the dances. The costumes are so pretty and the colors are beautiful, particularly in the Chinese dances. The hand postures I find to be very precise and purposeful; the sleeves suspended at the arms are very pretty.
"I know a little about the Chinese culture, but I have never seen such a show."
