PARIS—The audience was noticeably moved by the artistry displayed at the Divine Performing Arts' opening night of Chinese Spectacular on Friday, February 29 in Paris.
Marti Serge, a journalist for Le Monde, one of France's largest publications, appreciated the dance numbers, especially the Mongolian and Tibetan dances. "It was very traditional, very well done, and very poetic."
Mr. and Mrs. Gautier had similar sentiments. "We saw a good range of traditional Chinese culture; we were in China. We saw dance shows there, but it was different. We got a change of scenery [at tonight's performance.]"
Intrigued by the two dance numbers that depict the Chinese meditation discipline Falun Gong, Mrs. Gautier said "we will go home and inform ourselves about Falun Gong...I like the idea. It speaks of kindness, of tolerance."
Mr. Gautier added "There was a political aspect[that communicated] more freedom is needed in that country. We were in China a year ago. I liked the country but I remarked that there was a lot of suffering. I would very much like to go back to China, it fascinates me, but I don't think I will go back because I felt too much suffering. The people are completely neglected."
Other audience members picked up on this theme, such as Mr. Adil who remarked "The Chinese culture is based on tolerance."
Françoise Forzan, who also has been to China, liked the richness and variety of the evening's performance compared to what she had seen when she was abroad. "It was different from the circus in Beijing that I saw. This show communicates tolerance. I read an article about this show in a magazine and this characteristic was justly applied. I really chose this show in that context. It projects tolerance and [the need for] democracy. There was a strong critique of modern China but that pleased me."
