NEW YORK—Those who frequent Broadway shows in New York will sometimes find themselves at Radio City Music Hall for a show. In the case of the Chinese New Year Splendor, Jerry Lieberman and Joan Lehman were two such audience members.
"We're avid theater goers," said Lehman when asked about coming to the Saturday afternoon performance with her daughter Dana, and her daughter's friend, Erika. Lehman is a painter who lives in New York.
After attending so many Broadway shows, Lehman found the performances different than what she expected.
"I thought it would be a little more of a circus," said Lehman when asked what she had expected to see in the show, adding, "I respect what they're trying to do here."
Among the several solo performances, Lehman especially liked the two-stringed erhu (or Chinese violin), and was left wanting to learn more about the instruments.
"I loved when the announcers were talking about the instruments," said Lehman, adding, "And I would love to see more of an explanation about the instruments during the show."
Mr. Lieberman, an animation producer who lives in New York, found that he liked some of the more technical aspects of the program.
"The special effects were very good," said Lieberman. "I respect what they are doing with the music [live orchestra],"
The group of four heard about the show through publicity and advertisements around New York City.
When asked what he had thought before going to the show, Lieberman said he "had no expectations". But he added that he was walking away from seeing the 'Splendor' with a stronger sense of cultural differences.
"I think it's hard to analyze," said Lieberman when asked about his overall impression of the 'Splendor'. "There is a difference between eastern and western culture," he added. "This production is very respectful of Chinese culture."
The two young girls who attended the show with the couple, Dana and Erika, said they liked a lot of what they saw.
"We enjoyed it," said Dana.
The Chinese New Year Splendor will conclude its run in New York on Saturday night, Feb. 9.
