NEW YORK—"The program says New Year Splendor. It was more than splendor—that was magnificent," said Lester Cohen, who attended the Saturday afternoon performance of Chinese New Year Splendor at Radio City Music Hall.
"This type of venue, is better than anywhere in the world for this type of professional group. I mean it was just magnificent. With this backdrop, I don't know how they did it. Whether it was digital or what it was, but certainly it was a very spectacular performance," Mr. Cohen said, praising the show's special-effects backdrops.
He went on to discuss the choreography and the message he took away from the show.
"It was a Chinese ballet as far as I was concerned. It was very entertaining. And the choreographers ought to be commended. You would not see a show like this anywhere in the world, including China, where suppression of the virtuous message might take place. So the sum-up was that I was very pleased that I gave up my tennis to come to this beautiful new year's celebration," he said.
"I think that more Americans should attend and see these performances, which have a very strong message. And most people would agree with—how could you disagree with the message of leading a good life? And leading a pure life? So, certainly it's educational for children, it's educational for adults, and I think it serves a great purpose."
"I think I'd like to come again to have my granddaughter see the drum sessions.
"The vocals were very good. The talent was magnificent. The tenors and sopranos, and of course the translation of the message for me, was very good. You don't get a message like that from the general music you hear throughout the world. And the message was very philosophical, very virtuous, and talks about eliminating confusions in your life...It was an inspiration.
"I was particularly impressed by the vocals, and the message, because at least in the Chinese translations you get the message. Most American music is beat and jazz, and you can't hear the words at my age.
"So I hear a melody but I don't hear a message. And Frank Sinatra isn't around anymore, who was very good at pronouncing the words."
