ANTWERP, Belgium—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular brought the ancient traditions of China to the stage at Antwerp's Stadsschouwburg on Wednesday.

Audience members of all ages shared an appreciation for the performance company's unique presentation of China's fine arts.

Talissa van der Velden, a student, attended the show with her grandmother, Agnes van der Velden.

"I am interested in Eastern culture. I find it beautiful, very spectacular to see," she said.

Talissa was particularly struck by the use of gently waving silks to create the impression of rippling water during the piece entitled Nymphs of the Sea.

"Very beautifully done — I cannot find words for it."

Talissa's grandmother appreciated the vocal performances.

"The song by the lady with the alto voice was the most beautiful of all," Agnes said. "[The show] was really beautiful. Really…to use an unusual word…ethereally beautiful."

Jacqueline Bateau was also highly impressed. "Incredibly beautiful, a lot of magnificent clothing. My favourite was the last act, an apotheosis of everything, very complete."

"[It was] altogether fantastic. A better word I cannot find."

Representing the younger crowd, Annelies, Ilke, Lieve, Arne, Jelle, and Laura shared their impression of the Spectacular.

"I found it really beautiful with those costumes and all, really nicely done," started one of the youngsters. "Something to do again," remarked another.

When asked about their favourite scenes, various replies were heard at once.

"I like the moonlady," "the dancing!" "the drums before the break," "the one with the small girl that held the banner with truthfulness, compassion and forbearance," "I found everything beautiful!"

After Antwerp, the Divine Performing Arts tour will continue on to Paris, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
