ANTWERP—Stand-up comedian Geert Hoste is considered the founder of cabaret and stand-up comedy in Dutch-speaking Belgium.

He was at the first Chinese Spectacular show at the Stadsschouwburg on Tuesday and said the performance was "very beautiful".

"I am very surprised by the beautiful design," he said.

He said although he doesn't understand Mandarin he found the soprano "fantastic."

"I found the Tibetan and the Mongolian acts very beautiful and moving, and the rest."

He said the show was beautiful.

"It is purely aesthetic, the manners of expression that are used, the beautiful costumes. I sat there with binoculars to watch the costumes. The movements are so beautiful and pure."

Mr. Hoste's one-man shows have been attended by thousands of spectators and his television shows score more than one million viewers.

He is one of the most successful theatre writers and performers in Flanders. His books and DVDs score high on bestseller lists.
