LONDON—Philip Austin and his wife, Rosalind, came to the Saturday matinee of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular in London.
"Fantastic show," said Philip. "I didn't know what to expect. It exceeded what I was expecting. I'd recommend it to anyone."
Rosalind said that the costumes were beautiful. She also really enjoyed the variety in the performances: "It had opera, ballet—just about everything in it really. All-around entertainment."
Philip is an account who works in central London, and his wife Rosalind is an estate planner.
They both said that the element of the traditional culture came through strongly.
"The words of the music were quite spiritual," said Rosalind.
Philip said that the references to spiritual practice Falun Gong in the performances were of great interest to him.
"I am aware of the Falun Gong, because I work round the corner from the Chinese embassy everyday [and has sees the Falun Gong protest there]. So I am aware of the politics. I don't know if the whole thing is meant to be political, but that's how it came across as such to me. I felt positive about that—I thought it was good. I didn't realise that before I came to the show."
He added, "I liked it when they were telling a story in the act, rather than when it was just beautiful. I preferred the story elements. Like when the people were being abused in the prison, you could understand the story."
They both liked the first scene best of all. "It was so delicate and beautiful," said Rosalind, describing it as "fantastic."
