LONDON—Cambridge City Councillor Raj Shah traveled 60 miles to attend Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at London's Royal Festival Hall on Friday evening.
"It was worth it … just marvelous!" he said.
Being of Asian descent Cr. Shah was familiar with the ancient religious figures depicted in the Chinese Spectacular.
"The way the gods and goddesses are portrayed in the choreography … it's beautiful. I am Indian by origin and of the Hindu religion."
To Cr. Shah, the Spectacular conveyed a particular message about the shared beliefs of ... religions and the underlying sense of morality which permeates the world.
"[The show] depicts the similarities within cultures. I think the one particular thing that I like is that we are all in this world as a kind of a stage, [we are] just at different sites."
Cr. Shah gave examples of similarities between ... religions found in the show, such as belief in reincarnation, as well as principles that are shared by all righteous persons such as belief in upholding one's virtue by doing good rather than bad deeds.
Shaw was also greatly affected by the scenes portraying Falun Gong, a spiritual/meditative practice that is severely persecuted under the Chinese regime.
"It is about time the world wakes up to what is happening," Cr. Shah said.
He said he was aware of the persecution before the show and wished persecuted Falun Gong practitioners "all the best and support".
He said, "All the efforts that can be made [for their support] would be brilliant."
