LONDON—The director of theatre at Britain's most prestigious performing arts college described the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular as "very, very impressive."

Sue Thornton, director of technical theatre at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, said that she thoroughly enjoyed the show, which made its London premiere at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday night.

"In a way I'm not surprised by it because I've seen quite a few things from the Far East, but it's so beautiful, so lovely and the dancers! There's just a kind of life from inside them that's coming out," she said. "Many favourite dance is the Tibetan one, with the long sleeves, because the young girls were just so happy!

"I feel the happiness coming from the bottom of my heart and I think that's what comes across most of all. It's very, very impressive."

She added: "I think the costumes are fantastic and I like how you're creating very quickly the impression of each scene with the computerized pictures at the back. It's a big stage to fill at the Royal Festival Hall and I think you're doing very well."

Ms. Thornton said that she especially liked the live orchestra.

"I think the orchestra is very interesting because it's a mixture of two cultures.

"There're a lot of violins, which are very classical instruments, but there are also Chinese classical instruments mixed up which works very well."
