LONDON—The mayor of one of London's most cultured boroughs has described the Chinese Spectacular as a "feast of colour and grace."
Camden Mayor Dawn Somper was a VIP guest at the show's opening performance on Friday night.
She said, "I've never seen a show like this—so beautiful and so interesting, and it's a pity we don't see more of it in this country."
She particularly enjoyed the large-scale group dances.
"The water dance ['Nymphs of the Sea']—there was such grace and such beauty, and they're such beautiful dancers, they really are. It was very difficult to see their feet move. It's very different from English dance where you see the feet all the time."
She added that the show was "absolutely perfect technically."
"I thought it was wonderful. It was an absolute feast of colour and grace, and there was a bit of humour in it too, apart from drama, it was all together there on the stage. It was lovely.
"I believe that anyone seeing this kind of show wouldn't want it [traditional Chinese culture] to die again. They'll always be clamouring for more, so you've got a built-in audience now."
She said that learning more about the culture of China was a "revelation" to her.
"Another thing that was very interesting was the backdrops. [That] was beautiful, and it was very interesting to see the words of the songs on them."
The show, which has been almost entirely sold out except for seats with obstructed views, will continue till Sunday after a matinee and evening performance on Saturday.
After that, the Divine Performing Arts dance company will continue the tour to Paris, Geneva, and Vienna.
