LONDON—The director of a London-based South Asian dance organisation had high praise for the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular performance, saying the show continued Asian narrative and spiritual traditions.
"It was awesome. I just loved it," said Mira Kaushik Order of the British Empire (OBE), director of Akademi. She said that the "hardcore" physical training required for Asian dance was evident in the show and that she could see echoes of Hollywood, classical ballet, and popular culture.
"And I was delighted to see the dances from Mongolia and Tibet. Despite all the political conflicts that nations have, it's so wonderful to see artists getting together and performing. So congratulations! Hats off to the community!"
"I was delighted to see the show. It reminded me of our early days in London," she said.
"I work with diasporic communities. Most of the work we create and we do is roughly based on memory of our imagination, or imagination of the memory of our past."
She felt that the use of the high-tech backdrop continued the narrative traditions of the Asian community, as did the spiritual side of the performance. "We work with specific visuals and narration," she said of her own organization.
"In London I'm working with far more subtle and abstract interpretation of that."
"So from a commercial point of view, for the world, it was amazing. And I loved it."
Mira said that the show had a connection with the modern world by virtue of its young performers being from America. She said that they were "training at that level of perfection in terms of drumming and in terms of physical coordination. Beautiful, beautiful."
"You could see so much fantastic spirit," she said.
