LONDON—John Ellis is a sound system engineer from Brighton who designs sound systems for concert halls like the Royal Festival Hall in London, where he caught the opening night of the Shen Yun Chinese Spectacular.
"It sounded good," he said. "I enjoyed the music. I enjoyed some of the more traditional Chinese instruments."
He said it was interesting to see that they blended the traditional Chinese instruments with a classical orchestra. "I thought this blend was very good," he said.
"I like Chinese culture. I have quite a few Chinese friends—I live in Brighton, where there are many Chinese students and Chinese people."
He said that the Shen Yun Spectacular was an interesting insight into some of the historic art and historic dance of China.
"I've done some reading on the Beijing opera, so I have a bit of knowledge of that side of Chinese art. It was very interesting to see the Chinese traditional dance and music come together in a historic kind of way."
"Overall, it was very interesting with the different elements. There was no chance to get bored, in the sense that it was always moving on and it was interesting how the elements came together."
John thought that more people should come to enjoy the show. "It's something different from your visual ballet or your visual kind of dance or Western dance," he said.
John's favorite moment? "I enjoyed the opening scene—that was handled very well. And the drums were very spectacular."
