THE HAGUE, Netherlands—The Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular brought the traditions of China to the stage at Den Haag's World Forum Convention Center Wednesday evening.

Audience member Marcel Gemblens, a photographer and filmmaker, was impressed by the use of computer-animated backdrops.

"I enjoyed the backgrounds with the very smoothly changing figures on it...the actors, who came in the screen trough the fabric and then appear in reality on the sides of the stage. That was really nice to see."

Mr. Gemblens also appreciated the Spectacular's interweaving of Chinese and Western music.

"When you hear the tones together, the major melody is Chinese, but the tones underneath are more Western, to make it understandable for the [Western audience]."

An artist himself, Gemblens noted that the Spectacular represents more than entertainment.

"It is an artistic way to express [desire for] freedom."

Gemblens spoke of the repression of the Chinese people by the Communist regime in China.

"The ideals of the Chinese people can be expressed, outside of China, through the arts. It's very sad that it has to happen outside of China...that it is forbidden in China."
